June 1 marks first day of hurricane season; Get your supplies!

June 1 marks the first day of the hurricane season in the North Atlantic. For the last three years, scientists have predicted seasons to be below normal, but this year they're forecasting a "near normal" season. That means there's a 70 percent chance that 10 to 16 named storms will form. Out of those, four to eight could strenghten to hurricane status. Of those, anywhere from one to four could become major hurricanes.

Tuesday, President Barack Obama spoke at a briefing at the FEMA headquarters in Washington on the importance of being prepared.

"It is every citizen's responsibility to be prepared for a disaster. And that means taking proactive steps, like having an evacuation plan, having a full stocked disaster supply kit," he said.

The most active hurricane month is September.

Be sure you're prepared. First things first, stock up on all necessary hurricane supplies. A list of about 30 items has been posted online, and Local 15's Taren Reed shopped for those items Wednesday.
