Clarke Co. Roads Closing at 2PM Tuesday
CLARKE COUNTY, Ala. (WPMI) Clarke County has been getting hit with sleet for several hours now. No snow has started falling there as of 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Clarke County Emergency Management Agency Director Roy Waite joined Local 15's Greg and Kym on Local 15 News at Noon Tuesday. He said all roads in the county will be closed at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
"... We just got finished with a meeting a few moments ago where we will be closing all county roads effective at 2 p.m. today. We have a pretty consistent area of about a quarter inch of ice through the central part of the county. The north and south parts of the county has about an 1/8 of an inch of ice. We've gone past the point of just being roads, bridges and overpasses. Now we have roads, out country roads, intersections that have completely iced over and some roads where you have a 30 yard stretch of a road that's iced over. It has become so dangerous to travel that we are getting ready to issue that notice that we will be closing all county roads effective 2 p.m. today until further notice," Waite said.
"We started seeing the freezing rain and sleet around 6:30 (this morning) and it's pretty much been all sleet until around 8 this morning. We've had numerous accidents, most of those have been minor... we've had a tremendous amount of drivers out on the road," he added.
