Customer Shoots Suspected Robber
MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) A customer carrying a handgun stopped a robbery suspect in his tracks on Tuesday afternoon.
Officials say two men held up the Family Dollar on Stanton Road around 5:30 p.m. Police say the two suspects entered through the back of store while employees were unloading a truck.
One of the alleged thieves forced a store employee to get money from the register. As the worker went to grab the cash, a customer stepped in a pulled the trigger.
The suspect was shot multiple times.
The case is getting mixed reviews from customers and people in the community. While some call the customer courageous, others question if more weapons are really the answer.
Because you have to protect yourself as well as surroundings and people that are in the store, said Geneva Chapman, a frequent Family Dollar customer.
I would have liked him to been in there, said Jimmy Chapman, but Im talking about as far as the law, he broke the law. Theres no way around the law but to abide the law.
The store is equipped with surveillance cameras. In light of the robbery, Ray Houston wants more done.
They need a security guard up here though, Houston said, cause it can happen again at anytime.
Police say the injured suspect was taken to the hospital. He will be charged with first degree robbery.
The second man fled the scene.
Officials tell Local 15 News the customers who shot the suspected robber will not be charged.
