Jags' Brown named Sun belt Conference pitcher of week
MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) —
After earning the honor a league-best five times last season, University of South Alabama softball pitcher Devin Brown was selected as the Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week as announced by the league office on Tuesday.
The honor is the eighth weekly league honor of Brown's career. Her pitcher of the week selection also marks the 18th for the program and the 31st conference weekly honor for a Jag.
After earning preseason all-conference accolades and being selected to two preseason All-American squads, Brown certainly lived up to those expectations during the Jags' opening week of play as she was a 2-0 with two complete game shutouts and a save in 15.2 innings of work and did not allow a run. Brown struck out 25 batters in her three outings while allowing just six hits and one walk en route to being named to the Sand Dollar Classic all-tournament team.
In her season debut, Brown entered in the top of the sixth with Central Arkansas threatening with the bases loaded and one out, but the junior ended the threat with a strikeout and a ground out. In her first start, Brown recorded a one-hit complete game shutout against UCA, while striking out 10. Brown allowed just two base runners – an infield hit and a hit batter – while using just 87 pitches.
On Saturday, Brown held Jacksonville State to just four hits in another shutout. JSU had scored 26 runs in its first three games, but was held scoreless. Brown worked out of a bases-loaded one-out jam by striking out two of her season-high 12 batters. From that point on, Brown retired the next 14 batters she face and 17 of the final 19 to end the game, including the final two Gamecocks swinging with two aboard in the final inning and USA holding a 1-0 advantage.
Brown and the rest of her Jaguar teammates will be back in action on Wednesday night when they face the fourth-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Rhoads Stadium and can be seen on SEC Network+ or listened to on the radio at 99.5 The Jag FM.
USA has now begun the season with a 5-0 record for the second-straight season and the third time in the last four.
