The Sun Belt Conference office released individuals named to the league's Commissioner's List and Academic Honor Roll for the 2016-17 academic year on Tuesday, and for the second season in a row the University of South Alabama Department of Athletics had 171 student-athletes recognized.

In matching the department's number from the 2015-16 campaign, it marks the third consecutive year that USA has set or tied its record for number of honorees.

The group of Jaguars included 93 who made the Sun Belt Commissioner's List — which requires a grade-point average of 3.5 or better during the previous two semesters — and 78 who were on the SBC Academic Honor Roll after posting a 3.0-3.49 GPA for the academic year.

All 17 sport programs contributed at least one individual for the Jags, with the football and men's and women's cross country/track and field teams recording 25 student-athletes each. South's men's track and field team was recognized by the conference last week for the Team GPA Award in the sport, the fourth straight season it has accomplished the feat.

After winning the league tournament and making an NCAA Regional appearance, Jaguar baseball had 21 student-athletes honored, while the soccer program contributed 18 individuals after claiming its third consecutive conference regular-season and tournament titles en route to a berth in the NCAA Tournament. The USA softball team had 17 individuals recognized as well as 10 of 17 sport programs recorded a double-digit total.

In addition, Jag volleyball had nine members of the program qualify for honors, while women's tennis had eight and men's tennis seven. The men's golf squad had six individuals recognized and women's basketball saw five student-athletes earn honors, with four of five women's golfers posting a 3.0 GPA or higher in 2016-17.

Not only did South equal its number of student-athletes receiving Sun Belt academic accolades, the Jaguars claimed their third straight Vic Bubas Cup — presented to the top all-around program in competition in the conference — last season.
