South Alabama's head football coach Joey Jones announced Tuesday that junior Cole Garvin will lead the Jaguars in their season opener against Ole Miss.

"We're gonna go with Cole Garvin," South Alabama head coach Joey Jones said. "Cole has had a great camp ... We feel like the best decision for our football team is to go with Cole."

Garvin beat out junior Dallas Davis, who led the Jaguars for a majority of 2016, starting 10 of 13 of the Jaguars' games. Davis has surgery last spring on his throwing shoulder and had been recovering since. Jones said that Davis has not been "completely back" until the past couple weeks of fall camp.

"Dallas' arm never really got back completely healthy until a couple weeks ago," Jones said. "He's been a little bit off, but he had a good camp."

Last season, Garvin most notably helped lead the Jaguars to their first-ever win over a Top-25 team. Garvin completed 16 of 21 passes for 242 yards and three touchdowns, leading South Alabama to a 42-24 victory against San Diego State.

"We have some really good players at quarterback," Jones said. "It's like any other position, it's not you've got the job for the year, it's a week-by-week... it's a situation they have to perform. Cole has the job right now and that's what we're going with."

South Alabama opens against Ole Miss Sept. 2 at 6:30 p.m. in Oxford, Miss.
