2017 Tour de Bay Criterium & Fondo Ride this weekend in downtown Mobile
This year Tour de Bay Criterium and Fondo Ride will return to Downtown Mobile on May 6-7. A Criterium is basically cyclists racing on a closed course for a set period of time, similar to a closed track car race. Participants make a loop around the West Dauphin Street Entertainment Area with the Start/Finish Line in front of Wintzell’s Oyster House. The Criterium is an USA Cycling Sanctioned Event. A Fondo Ride is a simple, leisure ride. The Event is hosted by the Mobile Sports Authority and Team Share the Road and sponsored by Hargrove Engineering.
Tour de Bay is the annual fundraiser that benefits Team Share the Road, a non-profit organization that received tax exempt status in 2012. Team Share the Road’s main purpose is to educate and promote safe bicycling and pedestrian traffic. This is the third year Team Share the Road has worked with the Mobile Sports Authority to bring the Alabama State Criterium Championship to Downtown Mobile and the Fondo Ride throughout Mobile County. With the proceeds raised from Tour de Bay, Team Share the Road is able to supply helmets to children in need and to provide helmets to groups providing children bicycles. They were also able to use the funds for instructional safety seminars throughout Mobile County.
The Criterium will kick off at 10 AM on Saturday, May 6 and last until 7 PM. Grab a lawn chair and sunscreen and watch the action. There is a $25 entry fee for the first race and $5 entry fee for each additional race, if registered by May 5. The entry fee increases to $30 on May 6. There is no entry fee for spectators. After the Saturday Races are completed, an Open Band Performance by Infant Richard and The Delta Stones will run from 7 to 9 PM behind O’Dalys Irish Pub. Volunteers receive Food/Drink Vouchers & a T Shirt.
