BayBears beat Mississippi with one big inning
PEARL, MS - The Mobile BayBears beat the Mississippi Braves 5-3 on Wednesday afternoon at Trustmark Park. It took just one inning for Mobile (13-18) to post all five runs, while BayBears starting LHP Anthony Banda delivered his best performance of the season, limiting the M-Braves to just two runs over seven innings.
With the bases loaded and only one out in the top of the third inning, BayBears shortstop Ildemaro Vargas drove in the first run with a RBI ground out. Center fielder, Mitch Haniger pushed across another run with a RBI single, making it 2-0 Mobile. With two men on and two out, catcher Ronnie Freeman powered out his third home run of the year, a three-run shot over the left field wall to give the BayBears a 5-0 advantage.
Mississippi (14-19) recorded a single run in the bottom of the third, sixth and ninth innings but ultimately never challenged the BayBears lead. Banda (2-2) held the M-Braves bats to just two runs on five hits, walking one and striking out eight batters in a season-high, seven innings on the mound.
Game four of the five game series is scheduled for Thursday at 7:00 p.m. in Mississippi. The BayBears will return home on Saturday, May 14, to begin a 12-game homestand that runs from the 14th - Thursday, May 26.
