Auburn track and field set for East Preliminaries
AUBURN, Ala. – The Auburn track and field team will have 29 athletes competing at the 2017 NCAA East Preliminaries, May 25-27, at the University of Kentucky Outdoor Track and Field Facility in Lexington, Ky. Each will be vying for a spot at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, held June 7-10, in Eugene, Ore.
“This time of year it's all about competing and executing, and we're in a good place with our training and health,” Auburn head coach Ralph Spry said. “This is an exciting time when you get the chance to go out and compete against the best. We have to stay focused and take care of business. If we do that, we should have an exciting run at the NCAA Championships."
The Tigers have 16 women and 13 men competing at the East Prelims, including 10 All-Americans. The All-Americans in action include Akeem Bloomfield (indoor), Justin Carter, Randall Ceneus, Kahlil Henderson, Teray Smith and Wellington Zaza on the men’s team and Jenae Ambrose, Sashel Brown, Jessie Johnson and Marshay Ryan from the women’s squad.
For each individual event contested at each of the preliminary sites, the top 48 declared student-athletes were accepted into the competition. For each relay event, the top 24 declared relay teams were accepted into the competition. Combined events (Heptathlon and Decathlon), are not contested at the preliminary sites.
Twelve performers from each preliminary site advance to the NCAA Championships. Entering the weekend, the men’s 4x100m and 4x400m relays, along with six athletes, rank in the top-12 of the East Region. On the women’s side, the 4x100m relay and nine athletes rank in the top-12.
17 Tigers will compete on Thursday, beginning with Brianna Heilsnis and Jasmine Manigault in the women’s hammer throw at 10:30 a.m. CT. Sashel Brown will kick off the running events with the 400mH at 3:30 p.m.
