School Superintendent reacts to new subdivision

There's fallout from the prospect of hundreds of new homes coming to this Eastern Shore community an area that’s already bursting at the seams.

Last night school officials in Baldwin County expressed their concern that they may not be able to keep up with new housing in the Daphne area.

Developers say it'll take 10 - 15 years to build all 915 homes. The growth will come in phases. Phases the school system may not be able to keep up with." The homes will take up a huge 300 acres track just East of State Highway 181.

Concerned neighbors packed Daphne City Hall, most in opposition. Issues like traffic and school overcrowding were at the top of the list. Daphne parents are still talking about the development's future impact. "That's a lot of people, that's a lot of children and our school are already bursting at the seams. I know Baldwin county has some funding issues for schools. There are a lot of ramifications and I hope they think this all through and not just say hey developing money great. Let’s really think this through and think of the impact," said Karen Belina who lives in the Belforest area near the proposed subdivision.

"Pay as you go," is not going to be able to keep up with such rapid growth probably but we are going to do our best," said Baldwin County School Superintendent Eddie Tyler.

Days ago the Superintendent sent a letter to developers and has expressed his concern that everyone involved is not communicating with school officials. "You know you can’t stop this stuff you know there are no laws. I have no jurisdiction. We just have to know what’s going on and come to the table to talk to the developers, talk to the realtors," said Tyler.

The next step is for the Daphne City Council to vote on whether or not to annex the land in question. If the Council does not annex the land it will stay in the county's jurisdiction. Developers say the homes will come regardless.
