Mother says daughter was able to access porn on elementary school iPad

HOLLIS (WGME) - A parent in the Bonny Eagle School District says her 4th grader was recently able to access pornography while in the classroom.

She says iPads normally used for lessons are wide open for kids to search anything, and a warning, some of what the kids found is graphic.

Students at Hollis Elementary have had iPads in the classroom since the school year started. The district hoped it would teach children about responsibility, but one parent says her daughter got much more than that, when she accessed porn right at her desk.

The World Wide Web opens up a world of opportunities.

Jennifer Russell says that was just one answer she received from Hollis Elementary School Principal Clay Gleason.

"I mean I have emails, from previous and previous and previous,” Russell said. “I feel like I'm just asking the same question and not getting an answer."

Three weeks ago, Russell says her daughter, along with a number of other students, accessed pornography on their school issued iPads.

"She typed in the word sex, and the principal said she typed in the word licking," Russell said.

She says photos popped right up, nothing blocked.

"I really felt like this must have been some horrible mistake that her iPad somehow hadn't had the proper blocks put on it," Russell said.

The school district says they do have some firewalls on iPads and computers, but say students sometimes find a way around them, and say in class they try to teach kids to be responsible online.

The interim superintendent of MSAD 6 didn't want to go on camera, but said they're looking into ways to prevent this from happening again.

"I can't believe what I'm hearing really, and I see no interest at all in anyone wanting to change it," Russell said.

Russell says school officials told her there were similar problems with iPads at Bonny Eagle High School, but the district overall chose to not block any websites.
