Driver charged after killing woman in wheelchair

Police in Mobile have now charged a man with driving drunk after hitting and killing a woman who was crossing the road in a motorized wheelchair.

The incident happened Friday night shortly after 6:30 p.m. at Azalea Road at the entrance to the Cabana Apartments. The victim is 37-year-old Meredith Baxley .

She was a beloved figure in her community.

"Just a great person all around. She'd do anything for anyone. She was just really nice. Smiling and having a good time," said one community member.

Moments after the accident police made contact with 41-year-old Melvin Martin, the driver of a Ford Focus, believed to have been the car that hit Baxley.

Martin in now charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.

Police say they also found a small amount of marijuana in his vehicle.

A woman on a motorized scooter was struck by a vehicle right before 7:00 p.m. on Friday night.

Witnesses say the woman was crossing Azalea Road from Azalea Center over to her apartment complex when the car hit her.

A witness, who asked not to be identified, said she was in the parking lot when she turned around and witnessed the car hit the victim, "all I saw was her fly across the road and her stuff went everywhere."

Tamika Graham, another witness said, "I took off my shawl and covered her up and I was asking everybody for a jacket to help keep her warm. I said ma'am do you hear me and I saw her shoulder shrug."

The victims name has not been released.
