Wet Willies, other new businesses open in downtown Mobile
MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) —
Nearly a dozen daiquiri machines are churning inside of Wet Willie’s in downtown Mobile. The national chain restaurant and bar opened up at the corner of Conception and Dauphin streets earlier this week. Wet Willie’s is just one of many new businesses in the entertainment district.
Right next door, construction continues on the new Hilton Garden Inn Hotel in downtown Mobile. The new hotel is set to open in February 2017 with 93 rooms and on-site parking. Further down on Dauphin Street, owners of Five, another new restaurant, in the area are already looking to expand. John Frye, the general manager at Five, said they have plans to build at the old Café 615 location. He said there’s a lot of potential in the Port City.
“We fell in love with the people, we fell in love with what’s going on downtown, what Mayor Stimpson’s doing with the city, we just, we were like, we’ve gotten get on board with this,” Frye said.
On Monroe Street, Keith Sherrill has been working to set up shop in the downtown area. He’s one of the founders of Haint Blue Brewing Company. Raising money via a “WeFunder” account, Sherrill has leased out the old Crystal Ice Building. His long-term goal is to open a craft brewing company in the heart of downtown Mobile. Right now, he’s still looking for investors.
“The idea is to have local people in the neighborhood or tourist stop by….we want to be hyperlocal,” he said, “when I looking to bring something new, I knew it had to be here”.
