Thousands gather in Gulf Shores for Hangout Music Festival

Eight years running. The festival now has a 30 million dollar economic impact on the region. (WPMI)

Expect some 40,000 people to converge on Gulf Shores this weekend to be a part of the eighth annual Hangout Music Festival.

The gates opened this morning at 11am. Fans have come from all over to see Grammy Award winning artists like "21 Pilots" and "Chance the Rapper" on stage this weekend.

The crowd and the license plates say it all, Hangout organizers say most fans drive an average 10 hours to get here.

"It's worth it and we'll be at the beach with our best friend living it up," said Cindy Stegall from Dallas, Texas.

"I figured I would make the drive from Virginia and then I picked my brother up in South Carolina.

I also picked her up in Atlanta, said Ian Sheesley from Washington D.C.

The more the merrier that's why there's a 90 percent occupancy rate at local hotels and condos.

"We now know from the resorts and the condos that this is their number one grossing weekend in both dollar and capacity so its definitely filling heads in beds," said Hangout Director Sean O'Connell.
