Plan to build four Alabama prisons advances in committee
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WPMI) —
A new prison plan advances despite deep skepticism in the Alabama capitol.
A plan to build up to 4 new prisons now goes to the house floor where it faces uncertainty.
Under the plan, the state would build a new women's prison and lease or build 3 new men's prisons.
But critics aren't happy about the price tag.
The state would borrow between $200 and $845 million, depending on how many prisons are leased.
Right now Alabama prisons hold more than 23,000 inmates in facilities built to house only 13,000.
