Officials: Sewage spill leaves Fairhope waters over twice the safe limit
FAIRHOPE, Ala. (WPMI) —
The water at Fly Creek in Fairhope is over two times the safe limit after a massive raw sewage spill.
According to Mobile Baykeeper, 100% of the samples tested positive for high bacteria and sewage levels.
A malfunction at a lift station has been blamed for more than 200,000 gallons of the sewage seeped into the creek, and Mobile Bay.
According to Fairhope officials, an internal fuse blew Friday morning and turned off the lift station's pump and disabling an alert system.
A backup alert system with a horn was also knocked offline.
