Irma prep begins in Florida, items selling fast

(IMG:WPMI) Irma preparations begin in Florida.

Hurricane Irma is expected to hit Florida and Puerto Rico by the end of the week, both declaring States of Emergency.

Florida Governor Rick Scott doesn't want residents of his state to be caught flat-footed.

Scott issued a number of tweets urging Floridians to be ready.

Hurricane Irma's path still unknown, but people in northwest Florida aren't waiting to find out.

Hurricane essentials are flying off the shelves at stores like Walmart and Lowe's.

In Escambia County, employees at one Lowe's spent Labor Day restocking generators, while there is some concern about what is available.

Lowes employees tell us they're doing what they can to make sure the shelves don't go empty.

Generators and water at some stores are running low. So remember, grab supplies now rather than waiting til the last minute.

The basic essentials like water and food are important, but what else should residents stock up on?

Here are some top things to put in your disaster kits:

  • Waterproof bag
  • Important documents: social security card, birth certificate, passports, etc.
  • Map with evacuation routes
