Home invasion victim's wife describes murder scene
MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) —
A family is trying to cope with the loss of a loving father and husband in Mobile.
Police say a 70-year-old man was killed in a home invasion Thursday afternoon. Police are still trying to figure out the motive.
"He was a fine man, a fine man," said Kathi Willingham, who is overwhelmed with grief. Yesterday she lost her devoted husband of 49 years. She says someone murdered Larry Willingham after kicking in their backdoor.
"I came home and I found my husband on the kitchen floor dead. They had beat him up and I don't know what else they did to him," cried Willingham.
Police first told us Thursday that it appeared to be a shooting that happened here in the 3000 block of Pleasant Valley road. But neighbors said they never heard a gunshot.
With no arrests people living nearby are frightened, wondering if whoever killed their kind neighbor will be back.
"I have two little boys in my house. I'm scared someone is going to walk up and do the same you know," said one woman who lives on the street.
"I think it's terrible someone did that to the old man like that," said another neighbor.
Larry's wife says her husband was retired. She says her son last spoke to him around 1:30 Thursday afternoon. After that, they couldn't get in touch with him and both she and her son were worried.
"I just want them to know he was a great man he did everything for me. He took care of me as a husband he took care of my son, he was always there for us a very loving person," said Willingham.
One neighbor told Local 15 that she wants to move because of crime in the area. In fact in December of 2015, a 55-year-old man was shot to death on this same street just a few blocks down.
